Singing lessons at Dreamquest - answers to your frequently asked questions.

What age do I have to be to join your school?

At Dreamqest we teach people from 6 to 86! Our Absolute™ singing training program is tailored to meet the needs of;

  • Kids
  • Teenagers
  • Adults

Do you teach complete beginners?

Yes! Complete beginners including adult or mature age beginners are most welcome. Learning to sing is enjoyable no matter what your age.

I think I'm tone deaf as I can't sing in tune? Could I ever become a singer?

Singing in tune requires precise ear/larynx (voicebox) coordination. This is a learnt skill that will develop during your training however if you'd like to accelerate this process we highly recommend Pitch Master Pro.

What method of singing do you teach?

It's important to understand that there is no method or technique of singing - there is only good singing and bad singing!

Our method of instruction - Absolute Singing Mastery - was developed to help people sing by using minimum effort to achieve a maximum result.

Through the process of modeling, the skill of singing is broken down into basic chunks that you will find easy to learn and assimilate. As you develop greater awareness of visual, auditory, kinesthetic and proprioceptive feedback you will be empowered to refine and improve your singing skill. You will also notice very real results through measuring your progress.

I'm a good singer but I get really nervous in front of other people. Can I get over this?

This is actually quite a common complaint among many singers - inexperienced, experienced and even the well known and famous. At Dreamquest we successfully treat singing phobia, performance anxiety and even panic attack relating to getting onstage and singing in public.

During your training you will be introduced to BodySense - a revolutionary method of muscle awareness which will show you how to gain much greater awareness and control of your mind and body.

Do you have a list of students who you have taught?

Yes we do have a list and it's locked away in a safe due to privacy laws! Whilst we don't divulge personal details of students, many of our students have been happy to to record testimonials in mp3 format that you can listen to on our home page.

Is it best to have private lessons or group lessons?

It's good to do both. Initially you will have one-on-one private lessons to learn the basics of good technique. After this you can request to join a small group class of students of similar ability.

There are many reasons for learning in a group class. Firstly, you actually learn FASTER in the group environment as you will be able to hear and observe the training of other individuals.

Secondly you will also learn how to improvise and sing harmonies with other students. Thirdly you will develop your confidence and performing skills by singing in front of others on a weekly basis. Group classes are also a prerequisite to many of our grading levels.

Intermediate and advanced singers will also find both private lessons and group lessons beneficial.

What sort of style will I learn?

As well as learning healthy and safe voice production, you will receive coaching in the style of singing that you wish to master. For some students this will be pop or rock, musical theatre, rnb, jazz, gospel or one of the many other styles that exist.

Some students choose to learn classical singing or opera, which also involes the study of languages other than English eg Italian, Latin and French.

How much does it cost and do you give any sort of discounts?

The cost of lessons varies according to how many lesson blocks you purchase in advance. The more blocks you purchase, the bigger the discount.

More information on these discounts can be found here or by phoning Dreamquest on 1300 651 508 between 2pm and 9pm.

I read your 'how to enrol' page and noticed that I am required to purchase a training book with 2 CDs. Do I have to buy these?

By purchasing the Absolute Singing Mastery book and CDs you will get far more value for money from your lessons.

Many students come to us with poor vocal habits or are confused about the way in which their voice works due to misinformation from unqualified teachers. The Absolute Singing Mastery ebook is a highly detailed and factual account on how the voice works and is chock-full of handy tips and hints to advance your talent. The accompanying CDs are for your daily practise outside of lessons and will help to strengthen and improve all aspects of your singing.

Can I just try a one-off lesson to see if I like it?

Casual or trial lessons are available, but fees are higher than for purchasing a larger block of lessons.

It's important you understand that becoming a good singer takes time, dedication and discipline - not just one lesson. If you have a genuine desire to learn about your voice, improve your singing talent and grow as a person then you will definitely enjoy your lessons. If you're not sure if you will like singing lessons then we suggest taking up another hobby.

We recommend enrolling for a minimum term of lessons (one month) to see how much your singing skill advances in that time.

What sort of songs will I get to sing in lessons?

At Dreamquest we are focused on helping you develop the style of singing that interests you along with learning songs that you like.

When you choose a song to learn please check with your teacher that the song is suitable for both your voice and level of ability. It is important that you bring your backing tracks - music CDs without the singing on them - to all your lessons so your teacher can coach you with the songs you wish to learn.

For further information on our range of backing tracks please click here.

How long do I need to attend lessons?

This varies from person to person, and will depend on your personal goals as a singer. Most students stay for between 3 and 5 years.
By studying with us for this length of time you can expect to become a highly accomplished or world-class singer.

When will I get to sing in student concerts?

You will be permitted to participate in a student concerts once you are able to sing in tune and sing well enough to perform in front of an audience.

To get to this level of competence you will need to show regular and committed lesson attendance and bring your backing CDs to every lesson.

Is it better that I get experience as a singer by doing ANZCA / AMEB exams or performing in Dreamquest student concerts?

Both singing exams and concert performances are recommended and are useful in different ways.

Singing exams involve singing to an examiner in an otherwise empty room. You will usually have to choose the songs from set song lists. There is no applause or feedback from the examiner as they will be making notes about your performance. The experience you gain from music exams will be useful for future auditions and if you wish to do further music study at university level.

Singing in Dreamquest student concerts gives you relevant industry experience - especially if you wish to be a professional musician - as you will be singing live to an audience in a venue. The concert fee is very affordable and you are encouraged to bring your family and friends along. DVD footage is available after the concert to review your performance. You will also receive a written report along with a grading certificate.
